The 2011 hurricane is the biggest for at least a century, with 400,000 people in its path.

Tropical Cyclone Yasi was upgraded to category five this morning and authorities warned it was likely to be more life-threatening than any storm seen in Australia in living memory.

More than 89,000 homes have lost power, airports are closed and military forces were used to airlift 200 hospital patients to Brisbane, about 1,500 kilometers to the south.

The Bureau of Meteorology said that the storm's large and destructive core has started crossing the coast near the small town of Mission Beach in northern Queensland state.
