Is Playing Video Games Bad For You?

Is it true what they say that playing video games is bad for your mind and brain? That's why there's so much controversy when children become addicted to them.
What's the risk of letting my child play video games for more time than what he spends doing his homework?
Because I won't let him play if it's going to be bad for his health in the long run.
Some parents have told me that video games are not bad for you and that they are harmless but I want to be sure before letting my son play them.
