Where is Amoeba Found in Water?

Where can Amoeba be found in the water? Recently, there have been several reports of people who go for a swim and end up with the bug.
I've read about different cases of brain-eating amoeba, as it is sometimes known, that causes meningitis.
I live near the water so I want to make sure I'm not at risk of contracting Amoeba. Is there a specific location they live in?
I know they are in the water, but where exactly?

It can be everywhere. This year, cases have been reported in the waters of Virginia and Florida. It's always in places where the water is hot.
After the Amoeba enters your brain, it provokes something called primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, which basically means brain inflammation.
Amoeba moves into the body through the nose and destroys brain tissue.
The last time the bug was this prominent in the news was when six people died from it back in the Summer of 2007.
Amoeba also receives the name of Naegleria fowleri.
