Bill Erwin, an actor best known for his role as a crotchety old man on "Seinfeld," died at his home on Wednesday.

Bill Erwin received an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of the irritable Sid Fields in the 1993 Seinfeld episode The Old Man.

His character was convinced that the maid was stealing his money, and that Jerry was trying to get rid of him.

Bill Erwin’s son, Mike, told the Los Angeles Times that his father passed away of age-related causes at his home in Studio City, Calif. on Dec. 29.

Erwin enjoyed a long career in movies, theater and particularly television, taking dozens of roles on several shows.

Besides Seinfeld, Bill Erwin worked as a character actor on several programs, including "The Twilight Zone," "Gunsmoke," "The Golden Girls," "Who's the Boss?" and "Growing Pains."

Bill Erwin was also a stage actor, working on Broadway, the Laguna Playhouse, Pasadena Playhouse and Theater 40 in Beverly Hills.
