Don't Ask Don't Tell Pros and Cons List?

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the policy that bars gays and lesbians from serving openly in the US military, has long been controversial and in the political crosshairs.

Many Republicans, led by Sen. John McCain oppose the repeal bill, arguing it should not be considered during the current time of war.

About 14,000 service members have been discharged since the Don’t Ask Don't Tell policy was instituted, according to lawmakers who support the repeal.

These are basically the pros and cons of the Don't Ask Don't Tell bill.

If the Don't Ask Don't Tell legislation becomes law, it will mean that for the first time in American history, gays will be openly accepted by the military and could acknowledge their sexual orientation without fear of being kicked out.

Republicans are against repealing DADT, claiming it would hurt unit cohesion and that troops had not been given an adequate chance to voice their opinions on the bill. The biggest argument has been to not mess with the military, to do a “social experiment,” in the time of two wars.

Fired gay and lesbian soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen have been seen around Washington for months and months, telling their stories and urging the Congress to act.

Once the Don't Ask Don't Tell law is repealed, gays will be openly accepted by the military for the first time in U.S. history, and can acknowledge their sexual orientation without fear of being kicked out.
