Senate Tax Bill Passed?

In an unprecedented move of bipartisanship, the Senate passed President Barack Obama's $858 billion tax bill Wednesday afternoon.

The tax bill now moves to the House of Representatives where it will faces more resistance, though many expect it will pass.

The bill would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for all working Americans, continue some of the middle class tax benefits provided under the Obama-era stimulus plan, extend unemployment insurance for 13 months and reduce workers’ payroll taxes for the next year.

The House plans to tackle the bill Thursday. President Obama has repeatedly urged Congress to pass the legislation negotiated between the White House and Republicans.

The legislation was introduced Thursday night by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., after Republicans, the Obama administration, and some Democrats agreed to it.

Many of Obama's fellow Democrats strongly oppose the measure as favoring the wealthy and are still angry with him for cutting the deal with Republicans without them.

Opposition to the tax deal also appears to be growing on the Republican side, as conservative critics blast the impact of the $858 billion deal on the federal deficit and the credibility of GOP campaign promises to curb spending in Washington.
