Police are investigating the possibility a serial killer may have left four bodies alongside a short stretch of road in New York state.

The first body was found Saturday and three more bodies were found on Monday. The bodies could have been in the area for as long as a month. One of the victims is Shannon Gilbert, a girl who was reported missing in May.

Because of the proximity of the bodies, police are working under the assumption the death of Shannon Gilbert is connected with the other bodies by the same serial killer.

Shannon Gilbert and the other bodies were found between Gilgo Beach and Cedar Beach, in heavy brush near Ocean Parkway, which runs along the narrow island.

Shannon Gilbert, the missing Jersey City woman who may be one of the four decomposing bodies found in Oak Beach, Long Island, was last seen by her "driver'' in the beach town acting "delirious" and running away, according to the missing persons report filed in May.

However, the discovery comes almost 8 months after Gilbert's family say she made a frantic 911 call for help from Gilgo Beach in Long Island.

Shannon Gilbert had arranged through the listings website Craigslist to meet a client on Fire Island and has not been seen since.

Shannon and the other three were found only feet from the road and, according to police, the bodies had been thrown from a vehicle.
