Childhood: Old & Classic TV Cartoon Characters from 90s?

What's with the surge of people putting their favorite cartoons as their profile pics? I don't understand!
Even my friends are starting to do it, I've been seeing all the regular pics replaced by old, classic TV cartoon characters. I recognize all the cartoons from my childhood, I'm a kid from the 90s.
Is there a certain application or website which creates them? I believe they all come from the same source because they look similar.

Did you change your Facebook profile pic to your favorite childhood cartoon character?

This week, about 10 of my closest friends changed their profile pictures to cartoon characters. At first I didn't know why but then I found out it's mainly to create awareness against child abuse although some people just do it because they love cartoon characters from the 90s, 80s and 70s.

I don't know where this started, though.
I checked the UNICEF's website, the Unicef's FB page and the UNICEF Philippines page and there's no indication it started from there or the cause is towards donating to the NGO.

If you want to change your pic, you can download old and classic TV Cartoon Characters from 90s and other decades in this website, 90scartoons.co.uk.

There are many who are criticizing this movement. Though it doesn't really help end child abuse, it's a nice way of showing support and spreading awareness.

Rugrats is my all time favorite.
People always say "90s cartoons are best" but I always hear the same thing with every generation.
In ten or twenty years, we will hear that the best cartoon characters were the ones from the new millenium and that everything before that is too old.

As a child of the 80s I was a huge fan of the Smurfs (and Strawberry Shortcake and Garfield) Sure, being a girl I loved Smurfette.
I still have somewhere a bunch of Smurfs related merchandise. Dating back to age 5 I got a hot Smurfette watch for Christmas from my mom.

Does anyone else think that the idea of posting cartoon characters on your Facebook profile is dumb and does nothing to help the cause at all?
Even my mom did it and accused me of being selfish for not wanting to replace my picture with a cartoon.
I'm all about helping the children but can anyone explain to me how by changing a profile pic you're actually helping in any way?

Well, it's true that by uploading a classic cartoon character you're not doing anything to fight child abuse, it's more of a unity thing to basically state that all these people stand behind fighting child abuse.
And it creates awareness, people ask why and the cause is mentioned.
