Finally, after eight years of delays over questions about Brian David Mitchell's mental health, the man will face a jury in Salt Lake City's District Court. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in a federal prison.
The trial of Smart's alleged abductor is scheduled to begin Monday in a federal courtroom.
Elizabeth Smart was 14 years old when she was kidnapped in 2002, taken from her home on the night of 5 June. She was missing until 12 March 2003, when she was found in a Salt Lake City suburb with Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Ilene Barzee.
Today Elizabeth is 22 years old.
Now Elizabeth Smart is expected to return to Utah from France where she is serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to testify against Mitchell.
