Michael Douglas was invited by Letterman and he talked about his stage 4 throat cancer, the most advanced form of the cancer. Michael Douglas said he's undergoing a brutal mix of chemotherapy and radiation to treat a tumor at the base of his tongue.
Dr. Robert Haddad, an oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, who is not involved in Michael Douglas's care, says this kind of cancer generally responds well to the grueling combination of radiation and chemotherapy.
Michael Douglas found out he had throat cancer in early August after experiencing throat and ear pain.

Douglas told Letterman he faces an "eight-week struggle" and he just finished his first course of radiation and chemotherapy treatment. "It's a fight," he told People magazine. "It really knocks you out."

When asked about his chances for recovery, Mr. Douglas replied: “The percentages are very good. I would hate to say, but right now it looks like it should be 80 percent, and with certain hospitals and everything, it does improve.”
