About a hundred thousand working people are set to lose their unemployment benefits come spring.

According to the Department of Workforce Development, those people will probably lose their job benefits six weeks sooner than expected.

The U.S. unemployment rate held steady at 9.7 percent in February, above the most recently reported Wisconsin jobless rate, the U.S. Labor Department said Friday.

"Congress has passed and President Obama has signed an extension of the deadlines for establishing eligibility for federal unemployment benefits programs. This legislation did not create any new or additional benefits. It only moved the deadline for establishing eligibility for the programs to the week ending April 3, 2010. Continue to file your weekly claims. We will notify you as you become eligible for additional benefits within the new deadlines. Congress continues to work on extending the deadline until the end of 2010. We will provide more information as it becomes available. "

About 36,000 jobs were cut nationwide on the month, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

Employment fell in construction and information, while temporary help services added jobs, the BLS reported.

Unemployment benefits may be ending much earlier than previously announced for as many as 100,000 Wisconsin residents.

Last week, state lawmakers warned unless emergency measures are taken soon, 104,000 Wisconsinites could lose benefits by the end of April. But on Monday, state Department of Workforce Development spokesman John Dipko said that of the 250,000 people currently receiving weekly unemployment benefits, about 100,000 are currently in federal extension programs set to end on Feb. 28.

The Wisconsin Unemployment rate dropped in April and state labor officials say 16,400 jobs were added in the largest one-month jump in more than 14 years.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in April was 8.5 percent compared with a national seasonally adjusted rate of 9.9 percent. Wisconsin is recovering from the economic crisis.
