Mars Close to Earth: August 27 2010?

I have been getting e-mails and messages that mars would be as close as the moon on 27th august 2010. Is this true? That's tonight, it will be awesome to see if it's not a hoax.
How do you think Mars being the closest to earth in over 5,000 years on August 27 2010 will affect people on earth?
I want to know if this is real. Is Mars really gonna be close to the earth tonight, August 27th 2010?

No, it is not true. It was true about 6 years ago. This chain email / text goes round every August 27 since then. The close approach this year will be in October.
It's a combination between a misunderstanding and a hoax. Mars is nearly on the other side of the Sun and won't be very close to Earth anytime soon.

The hoax originates from a real event that happened 7 years ago, when Mars and Earth were lined up just right so that Mars was closer to Earth than it had been in a long, long time.

Mars is presently almost on the other side of the Sun, very far away, so it appears very small, even in telescopes.
