Mel Turpin Suicide Death?

Mel Turpin, a former NBA player and all-American Kentucky center, committed suicide Thursday at his home in North Lexington, Ky.
The Fayette County Coroner had said that Mel Turpin took his own life in his Lexington house, but didn't say how.
Margaret Burrus, his sister, tearfully told reporters outside her home that her brother was diabetic and trying to keep it under control.

The coroner would not say how Turpin committed suicide or whether he left a note. Turpin’s sister, Margaret Burrus, said he was diabetic and was trying to keep it under control. Authorities said Mel Turpin’s wife was not at home at the time of the death.

Mel Turpin was a star at Kentucky, and was taken 6th overall in the legendary 1984 NBA draft. In five seasons with the Cavaliers, Jazz, and Washington Bullets, Turpin averaged 8.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Mitch Barnhart, Kentucky athletics director, said school supporters "will forever remember Melvin and all his contributions to our basketball program."

Current coach John Calipari expressed his sympathy to Turpin's family and said he is praying "for their strength during this time of grief."
