This is a review of the movie Degrassi Goes Hollywood, it contains several spoilers:

“Degrassi: The Next Generation” knows how to bring the drama.

Over the years, this Canadian import has earned the praise of critics and fans for its handling of such sensitive topics as date rape, HIV/AIDS and drug abuse.

But in “Degrassi Goes Hollywood,” its new made-for-TV movie airing Friday at 8 p.m. on The N, the troubled teens of Degrassi Community School leave their baggage at home.

Kevin Smith (“Mallrats”) and his sidekick Jason Mewes (“Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”) return to Degrassi’s hallowed halls to cast Mewes’ directoral debut, “Mewesical High.”

“Degrassi kids just have this honesty Hollywood kids don’t,” Mewes mutters.

Old rivals and recent high school graduates Manny Santos (Cassie Steele) and Paige Michalchuk (Lauren Collins) compete for the female lead.

Manny blows her first audition with Mewes at home, while Paige wins over the producer in Los Angeles.

This can only mean one thing: a road trip to Hollywood for a second chance.

The Smith-Mewes plot is absurd, even if they have a history with the show. The two guested years ago as themselves, filming the fictional “Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh.”

I suppose we should be grateful for continuity.

Still, their presence comes off as a cheesy gimmick.

Degrassi’s trademark turmoil-filled story lines are overshadowed by a running commentary on Hollywood’s vapid celebrity culture.

In an attempt to stay earnest, generous time is given to Ellie (Stacey Farber), the show’s troubled gi- next-door. To cope with her father’s return from Afghanistan, Ellie totes around a copy of “Valley of the Dolls” and broods.

Meanwhile, Paige parades around the film set with an annoying New Jersey accent and tiara. The drama-comedy dichotomy doesn’t work.

But that’s not the only thing out of place.

Actresses Vivica A. Fox (“Two Can Play That Game”) and Kelly Carlson, best-known for her role as a porn star in FX’s “Nip/Tuck,” appear as themselves.

Why?
