Vanuatu Earthquake 2010 Pictures?

Today, May 27, 2010, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck near the Pacific island of Vanuatu, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a regional tsunami warning for Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia.

The epicenter of the Vanuatu Earthquake was about 300 miles from Port Vila, Vanuatu's capital, and 1,290 miles from Brisbane, Australia. So far, NOAA's West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center does not expect a tsunami along the West Coast of the United States.

The USGS initially classified the quake as a 7.6 magnitude, but later downgraded it.

An 5.7-magnitude aftershock hit ten minutes later 35 kilometres under the seabed, 190 kilometres northwest of Luganville, Vanuatu's second-largest city.

"Sea level readings do not show any tsunami signals," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

Authorities in Vanuatu said they were checking for information on the quake and were pleased the tsunami alert had been canceled.

Vanuatu — a chain of 83 islands — lies just over1,400 miles (2,200 kilometers) northeast of Sydney. Vanuatu lies on the Ring Of Fire, a zone of volcanic arcs and oceanic trenches encircling the Pacific basin.
