Walmart iPhone 3GS $97 Sale?

Wal-Mart will cut the price of the Apple iPhone 3GS 16 GB to $97, from $199, according to CNNMoney.com and other reports.
That's an iPhone on sale for less than $100!

The move comes ahead of the expected June 7 announcement of the next version of the phone, iPhone 4.

When is the iPhone going to be available for sale at Walmart at 97 dollars? Is it from today?

Starting today, Wal-Mart is dropping the price of the brand new entry-level, 16-gigabyte iPhone 3GS to $97 with a new two-year contract.

The new price is $100 cheaper than its previous price and Wal-Mart said the sale has no end date, according to a May 24 Wall Street Journal blog post.

Leaked prototypes of a new iPhone have appeared on blogs recently. Apple is preparing for its annual developer conference where last year, the current 3GS version debuted. Apple declined to comment about whether it is coming out with a new iPhone but we all know that's the case.

The iPhone 3GS is still priced for $199 on Apple's Web site and that of its partners, including electronics retailer Best Buy Co. (BBY) and AT&T (T), the exclusive wireless carrier for the device in the U.S.

The move by Wal-Mart was in keeping with its "commitment to always lead on price," said Mehrdad Akbar, senior category director for wireless at Wal-mart U.S. Wal-Mart sells the iPhone in 1,800 stores nationwide.

As of Tuesday morning, the 8GB iPhone 3G is no longer for sale on Apple's Web site.
It's very likely that once the new iPhone hits stores, the iPhone 3GS will take the 3G's place as the discount model phone.
