The $100 dollar bill is the most often counterfeited denomination of U.S. currency outside the United States due to its wide circulation. It is the highest-denominated note issued by the Federal Reserve.
Security features include the 3-D security ribbon and the bell in the inkwell which will make it easy for people to authenticate their currency. "The new security features announced today come after more than a decade of research and development to protect our currency from counterfeiting," said Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios in a statement.
The $100 bill is the largest denomination note printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, a division of the Treasury. Larger denominations of $500, $1,000 and more are no longer issued but remain in circulation, especially among collectors.
The redesigned $100 bill had originally been expected to go into circulation in late 2008 but it's introduction was delayed to give the government time to refine all the new security features.
Franklin will remain on the front of the $100 bill and Independence Hall in Philadelphia will remain on the back of the currency although both have been modified in ways aimed at making it harder to produce counterfeit copies of the bills.

The new design follows more than a decade of research and development by folks at the Treasury Department, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the U.S. Secret Service. Less than a hundredth of 1 percent of all U.S. currency is counterfeit, but the $100 dollar bill is the most widely circulated and most frequently counterfeited outside the U.S., the Treasury said.
Another security feature is the "Bell in the Inkwell" image that changes color from copper to green when the note is tilted, an effect that makes it appear and disappear within the inkwell. (For more on the redesigned note and its features, visit www.newmoney.gov
The new currency will not go into circulation until Feb. 10 of 2011. That will give the government time to let everyone know in the United States and around the world about the new 100 dollar bill.
