What does "www" mean?

What does "www" in a web address mean?
I used to type it all the time and now I can get to any website without the www.
I don't know why that changed but it is more simple know.
Anyway, what does it mean?

WWW means "world wide web". As you say, it used to be mandatory to type it before the website's name but it is no longer required.
Also there is a handy shortcut, if you write down the name of any website in the address bar in your browser, and then hit Ctrl + Enter, "www" and ".com" is added automatically.
At least it works in Firefox and Explorer.
