How Can I Make a Home Network?

I have a laptop currently running MS Windows and I just bought a new desktop computer also running Windows. What I want is to create a home network between both PCs so I can share files and Internet connection.
What should I do to get the network working? Should I install something?
Do I need cables?

First decide whether you prefer a regular network or a wireless network.
If your idea is to setup a regular network, then you need to buy a router and then connect both PCs to the router. Windows will instantly recognize the network and you'll be able to share files between both PCs. It is actually pretty simple.
You can also setup a wireless network instead, in which case you should buy a wireless router.

The good thing about the whole process is that after you make the connection you're done, the OS will do everything automatically.
