What Is a Double Mastectomy?

Christina Applegate has a double mastectomy, E.D. Hill is going to get a double mastectomy soon.
So far I know this procedure is done so that you can prevent cancer.
You do it before you are diagnosed. I don't know what a double mastectomy is, I know is something the doctor does in your chest but not sure what it is.
What is a double mastectomy and how is the procedure done?

In medicine, mastectomy is the medical term for the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely.
This is how a double mastectomy works:

After the anesthesia, the surgeon will slice your chest open and remove all the breast tissue from your chest. Thatís includes all the milk ducts, all the lobules, all the fat and the blood vessels and lymph channels in the area as well, pretty much everything. It will also get rid of the cancer.

You can choose to have corrective surgery afterwards to repair the damage made by the double mastectomy procedure.
I recently read that a mastectomy costs £5000/$10,000 but this didn't include all the costs like appointments and probably not anesthesia, hospital stay, etc.
