The Story Of Cinderella

I'm sure you have all heard the story of Cinderella. You know the beautiful girl with the two mean step-sisters and wicked step-mother, who in the end gets her revenge.
I loved this story as a child and I was thinking about the origins of the story.
Who invented the tale and where does the story comes from?
Was Cinderella written originally in a foreign language?

The story of Cinderella is ancient, and there are variations in many countries. The most common version was translated from Charles Perrault's "Cendrillon", which first appeared in 1697.

However the Cinderella theme may well have originated in classical antiquity: The Greek historian Strabo recorded in the 1st century BC the tale of the Greco-Egyptian girl Rhodopis, which is considered the oldest known version of Cinderella.

The earliest European tale is "La Gatta Cenerentola" which appears in the book "Il Pentamerone" by the Italian fairy-tale collector Giambattista Basile in 1635.

So, the story is ancient. Really old.
Cinderella is one of my favorite Disney movies by the way.
