Happy Winter Solstice Celebrations?

I've read that people have celebrations for something like a happy winter solstice since ancient times. I was wondering what are some of those happy winter solstice celebrations around the world because it seems strange to me as we don't have any celebrations in my country for this day. I think it's a way they have to thank for the solstice but do they thank to the universe, nature or what? Does anyone know what are some happy winter solstice celebrations?

People held celebrations for "happy" winter solstice with many cultural and religious traditions. Christian happy winter solstice celebrations involved rituals of light and fire, which were thought to help beat back winterís gloom, and meant to be a reminder that brighter days were coming soon from the happy winter solstice day.
Another celebrations are the ones from India, in which Makar Sankranti celebrates the sunís ascendency, marked by gift giving as a present for happy winter solstice and special prayers.
