Is Columbus Day a Bank and School Holiday?

I want to know if Columbus Day (which is in October 10, 2011) is considered a business day or if it's a market and government holiday.
What about the military, does Columbus Day affect them too?
At work, some of my co-workers say Columbus Day is a national and federal holiday but I'd like to know if banks, schools, the government and even the market are going to be open or closed during the holiday.
Please help me clarify this doubt about Columbus Day.

Yes, banks, post office, schools and other government offices are closed on Columbus Day.
Columbus Day, which is annually on the second Monday of October, remembers Christopher Columbus' arrival to America on October 12, 1492.
Federal holidays are holidays when we don't get mail and banks are closed and it is observed by every state.
Columbus Day became a federal legal holiday in 1971 after lobbying from the National Columbus Day Committee.
Some schools have decided to say open, but very few of them. Most will be closed.
