Homeless American Girl Doll Story?

Is Gwen, the American Girl Doll, supposed to be homeless?
What's the story of the Homeless American Girl Doll? Who created the doll and where does the idea comes from?
Please explain.

"Gwen," which debuted this year, is portrayed as being homeless.
The homeless American Girl Doll is meant to teach tolerance and is part or an outreach program teaching young girls how to spot bullying and stand up and speak out against it.

In an accompanying book and movie, "Chrissa Stands Strong," a friend stands up for Gwen against bullying classmates.

Also in the same book, that comes with every American Girl doll, you learn that Gwen's father walked out on the family. Her mother lost her job.

American Girl dolls are expensive and extremely popular - among the most sought-after toys among girls from ages four and up.
