Is Columbus Day a Federal or National Holiday?

Is Columbus day 2010 a Federal or National holiday?
I mean, is a it a work and school holiday? Will some schools remain open or are all closed?
What about banks and the mail? Is Columbus Day what you call a legal holiday?
I needed to go to the bank today, I planned it yesterday but I forgot about the Columbus Day holiday, so any help will be appreciated.

Columbus Day is a federal holiday. Although Columbus Day is actually on October 12th every year, it's usually observed the Monday before.
Federal holidays are holidays when we don't get mail and banks are closed and it is observed by every state.

On Columbus Day, the U.S. post office is closed, so are public libraries, and other government or state institutions.
Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in 1937.
