Is Facebook good or bad?

I'm a teacher and I don't know much about Facebook. All my students use it and talk about it all the time, I think I'll get an account in order to try it.
But what I'd like to know is: is Facebook safe? People told me once I register an account with my name, search engines will crawl it and my Facebook page will show up first in the search results. Not sure if this is true though.

If I get an account, will I be able to control my privacy? In your opinion, is it good or bad?

You have nothing to worry about. Facebook is actually a safe website and you can always control every aspect of your privacy.
If people search for your name on Google it is possible that your Facebook page will be displayed on the results, but still they won't be able to see anything. In order to see your profile, they need a Facebook account and also they have to send you a friendship request. After you accept it, then they can see your profile, and only what you want them to see.

Don't worry, it's a fun place once you get to know it.
