Meningitis Symptoms in Adults and Children?

What are the symptoms of Meningitis in adults and children?
My son started to feel sick a few days ago, and at first I thought it was just a cold but now I'm suspecting he might have meningitis. My husband is showing symptoms too.
I've have arranged a doctor meeting for them but I'd like to know the exact symptoms just to be sure.
Is meningitis very contagious?

Symptoms of meningitis may appear suddenly or develop gradually over a period of days.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord.
High fever, headache, and stiff neck are common symptoms of meningitis in children and adults. Other symptoms are pain in the muscles, joints or limbs, such as in the legs or hands.
You should act quickly if you suspect your loved ones might have meningitis. It can lead to brain swelling and cause permanent disability, coma, and even death.
