Spirit Day October 20th?

October 20th 2010 is Spirit Day, the day that people should wear purple to call attention to the recent controversy involving teenagers who took their own life after reportedly being taunted because they were gay.
GLAAD says they hope the "Go Purple Day" or Spirit Day will show people who face the same pressures and bullying that there is a vast community of people who support them.

I think October 20th 2010 is the first time Spirit Day is celebrated. Who came up with the idea of Spirit Day? I think it's brilliant.

The ladies of "The View" each wore an item of purple clothing today.

Spirit Day was created earlier this month by teenager Brittany McMillan, in an effort to encourage fellow LGBT allies to "rally together" against anti-gay bullying in schools.

Spirit Day honors the teenagers who have taken their own lives in recent weeks because of anti-LGBT bullying. The color purple symbolizes 'spirit' on the rainbow flag, a symbol for LGBT Pride that was created by Gilbert Baker in 1978.

A handful of Facebook pages of Spirit Day have popped up, where people are pledging to wear purple. The numbers have reached well over 1 million.

The recent news of young people taking their own lives in the U.S. have made headlines all over the world and have led to a groundswell of opposition - particularly among students - to homophobic bullying.
