R.E.M. 2011 Band Break Up Why?

On their band Web site, R.E.M. announced what appears to be a definitive break up. I didn't see this coming specially in 2011 after so many years of being together.
It’s big news when a band as successful and influential as REM head for the hills.
R.E.M.’s edgy and experimental music earned them a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Why did they broke up? I can't even describe how much I loved the band in the 90s, they were so great.

Ever since Berry's departure interviewers have been asking REM why they're still together. They didn't give a reason, they just said it's a friendly break up.
R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry wrote songs that will forever be remembered.
For some time, R.E.M. challenged U2 and the Rolling Stones for the status of biggest band in the world.
Just about everyone knows the hits, and unlike most bands R.E.M could easily fit their “greatest hits” on a double-disc set.
