What is Hazing: What Does it Mean?

I've heard about something called hazing when you join a group but I don't clearly know what does it mean although I've been told that I'm going to go through that when I enter college soon, as it tends to be many fraternities there. I think hazing has to do anything with fraternities or masonry but I'm not sure what does it mean. It must surely be wrong as many people criticizes them but what does hazing precisely mean and what does it involve?

Hazing is used to refer to forms of rituals and activities involving harassment, abuse or humiliation to initiate a person into a group. Hazing is seen in different groups such as gangs, workplaces and fraternities. In countries such as the United States and Canada, hazing is thought to be related to college and their groups. It is similar to the Indian phenomenon of ragging. This activity may be physically violently or mentally degrading practices and can involve certain stuff that break the law.
