Lupus New Drug: Benlysta Price?

Benlysta is a new experimental lupus drug co-developed by Human Genome Sciences and GlaxoSmithKline. It has moved one step closer to approval. An FDA advisory panel voted to recommend approval by a sizable margin: 13-2.

If approved, Benlysta will be the first new drug to treat Lupus in over 50 years. Benlysta is designed to treat flare-ups and pain caused by condition, which is a little-understood and potentially fatal ailment in which the body attacks its own tissue and organs.

There are currently only three lupus treatments approved by the FDA: Aspirin, the steroid Prednisone and the antimalarial drug Hydroxychloroquine, dating since the Eisenhower administration. They all have severe side effects.

My grandmother has Lupus and she was happy when she read about this new drug.
What is the price of Benlysta going to be? Does anyone know anything about the cost?

Benlysta is designed to treat flare-ups and pain caused by lupus, a little-understood and potentially fatal ailment in which the body attacks its own tissue and organs. Ninety percent of lupus patients are women. The disease causes skin rashes, joint pain and inflammation of the kidneys and the fibrous tissue surrounding the heart.

No information about Benlysta's price has been revealed yet.

Benlysta is not a wonder drug that will provide relief to everybody with the debilitating disease, but it may provide benefits for some and allow them to taper off existing drugs, which have powerful side effects that some think are nearly as bad as the disease itself.

The drug is not without detractors. Several panelists voted against it. According to WebMD, some "FDA reviewers expressed concern about whether the 'somewhat marginal' effectiveness of the drug outweighs the potential increased risk of death, infection, and psychiatric effects, including suicide, associated with its use."
