J. D. Salinger stopped publishing after 1965, because he fiercely guarded his privacy.
Although he wrote for more than six decades, Mr. Salinger published no other full-length novel.
There will no doubt be a lot of tributes and appreciations to Salinger in the coming days.
Salinger wasn't just an influence for those suffering through teenage angst his work was felt throughout the film making world.
Despite his disappearance from the public stage -- some would say because of it -- Salinger has remained an object of fascination and enigma in the world of American letters.
Mr. Salinger died Wednesday, according to the AP, but no cause of death was immediately reported.
